Interest continues to grow regarding the Curtis Labor Day 3-Bridge Walk. The three Lakes Area Fireworks Council, sponsor of the event, announced that a motion will be put before the group at its next meeting to challenge the Mackinac Labor Day Bridge Walk people to a winner-take-all contest to see who has the most participants this year; If the locals win, they get the Mackinac Bridge; if they lose, The Mackinac people take control of the three Portage Creek bridges.
"Of course, it would have to be on a proportional representation basis, " said Tony Vos, Fireworks Council president, "but I think if we took our numbers as a percentage of the total population of the Upper Peninsula against their numbers as a percentage of the total population of the Lower Peninsula, we'd be the champs". Vos said he wasn't sure what would be done with the Mackinac Bridge if the locals won, but that he was positive the committee he was going to appoint could figure that out.
"Maybe we could use the bridge tolls to pay for the fireworks displays we put on after the Fourth of July parade and during the Winter Carnival, and we wouldn't have to keep having fund raisers all the time to get the cash, " Vos said. Vos acknowledged that it might be difficult to get the Mackinac people to agree to such a contest, but he continued, "I think most of the people in the Lower would welcome the arrangement. After all, if the Fireworks Council had the kind of money those bridge tolls generate, we'd put on a display that could be seen at least as far south as Detroit and Grand Rapids."
The Curtis Labor Day 3-Bridge Walk will be held Monday, September 6th 8 am till 12 Noon.
